2006 Burgundy - September 11, 2024

Basic Burgundy Facts. The heart of the Burgundy region is the Côte d'Or (Gold Slope) which is 30 miles long and very narrow. It is divided into two regions: Côte de Nuits (North) and Côte de Beaune (South). In the Côte de Beaune, the city of Beaune is by far the largest along with Pommard and Volnay. The smaller communities of farther south are the Chardonnay (white Burgundy) regions of Meursault, Puligny and Chassagne Montrachet. There are no red grand crus in the Côte de Beaune but some very highly regarded Premier (1er) Cru's from Pommard (e.g., Epenots) and Volnay (e.g., Des Ducs).

The greatest Burgundies generally are from Côte de Nuits. The towns (communities) are Nuits Saint George, Vosne-Romanée, Flagey-Echézeaux, Vougeot, Chambolle Musigny, Morey-Saint-Denis, and Gevrey Chambertin.

Production levels are really small, and pricing skyrocketing due to supply and demand pressures. The vineyards at the floor of the score are generally "Village" wine, then moving up the slope are the Premier Cru's, and farther up still are the Grand Cru's. Keep in mind that some Premier Cru's are better than many Grand Cru's. This is because quality is determined more by winemaker than land.

Overall, 2006 was a fairly good year (WS 88). It started with a cool spring followed by a very hot, dry July and a warm, but rainy September. Vintners that picked late were negatively impacted by cold rains. Côte de Nuits fared better than Côte de Beaune, with white wines showing generally better than. Top producers made some very good wine.
