Le Tastevin - Barbera - October 14, 2020
The Barbera variety been around long time. It is grown in 50% of Piementese vineyardds, and is the third-most planted grape in Italy. In the 1960s Giacamo Bologna (aka Braida) started selling varietal bottling rather than supplying grapes to merchant shippers, and in 1982 he made the first super quality Barbera in small French barrels (Braida Bricco dell' Uccellone). The grape variety is generally acidic so oak barrels helps tame this. Barbera is a third of the cost of Barolo with no aging requirements, hence fast cash for vintner, and is food friendly. However, high quality grapes in the right hands and years can lend age-worthy results.
